The summer ministry team is a vital part of the fun and meaningful ministry which happens at Camp Onomia.

As a member of our summer ministry team, you'll have the opportunity to work with children, youth, and families in a fun, Christ-centered, outdoor environment.
Through games, crafts, Bible study, environmental appreciation activities (Creation Care), team building, boating, camping, and more you'll walk alongside campers as they feel God's loving presence in their lives.

At Camp Onomia, we believe in the power of small groups, being outside, and fostering a strong sense of community. You'll play a vital role in making sure everyone is loved, accepted, and celebrated while at camp.

Throughout the summer you'll grow in leadership skills, gain valuable experience working with children and families, and create lasting memories. We have a number of positions available.

Summer Counselor

This position will provide leadership, care, and support to campers each program session, in order to encourage a positive Christian experience in an organized camp setting.

Responsibilities: Program services

Encourage full participation in camp events by each of the campers under your supervision
Provide small group leadership during Bible Study, cabin devotions, and cabin events, ensuring the safety of campers participating at all times
Inspire a welcoming, Christ-centered community where all people are loved, accepted, and celebrated

Responsibilities: Health and Safety

ALWAYS provide a safe environment for campers and staff by following camp guidelines and eliminating unsafe behavior
Make your supervisors aware of any unsafe conditions

Responsibilities: Involvement in the Camp Community

Be a positive role model for your cabin group and all other campers
Participate in all staff training events
Attend all staff meetings (Sunday at Noon and daily meetings as scheduled)
Assist in camp clean up at the end of each camping week
Take care of your personal needs, i.e., get adequate sleep, eat proper foods, notify the Program Director when ill or injured, encourage good physical and emotional habits
Respect the needs for personal privacy within the staff community while sharing fully in group events

Qualifications:

Faith in Jesus: Be willing to share your life with Christ with others. You don’t need to be a Biblical scholar, have all the answers, or conform to a certain expression of faith to be at Camp Onomia. A wish to grow, share with honesty, and be in intentional Christian community is desired.
Openness to Christian faith: Camp Onomia is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and follows the teachings of the ELCA, but we do not require staff members to be members of ELCA. Our campers come from a variety of denominations, faith traditions, different levels of experience engaging in faith, and experience in churches. Because of that, we are excited to welcome staff from other denominations, faith experiences, Biblical knowledge. We need staff who are able to relate to our campers, and walk with them as they explore their faith at Camp Onomia!
Passion for people: A desire for serving people of all ages, with emphasis on children and youth
Open-minded: Camp is a job like no other. Training to prepare you is provided, but a willingness to try new things, new experiences, and adventures is desired
Education: High school diploma required. Highly desired that onsite staff are 18 years of age by the end of the summer.

Compensation

Starting Counselors will earn $400/week
Those who are returning to Camp Onomia after a season of employment will earn an additional $10/week for each returning summer
First Aid/AED certification
Room and board
Ability to receive a lifeguard certification, and earn additional funds lifeguarding on the weekend.

Activities Coordinator

The Activities Coordinator plays a central role in creating a fun, safe, and engaging camp environment. This position is responsible for planning and leading daily activities, including arts and crafts, recreational games, and special events. The Activities Coordinator also serves as a mentor and point person for summer counselors, ensuring smooth communication and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

Lead crafts: Design and facilitate creative projects that encourage self-expression and skill-building for campers of all ages. Oversee stock and weekly cleanup of the crafting area.
Facilitate games: Organize and supervise recreational activities, ensuring inclusivity, safety, and high energy. Oversee equipment and inform year-round staff of repair and needs.
Serve as point person: Act as the primary contact for counselors regarding daily schedules, camper needs, and activity coordination.
Ensure safety: Monitor activities to uphold camp safety standards and respond appropriately to incidents.
Promote camp spirit: Encourage enthusiasm, teamwork, and community among campers and staff.

Together with the Leadership Team

Manage canteen: Oversee operations, including stocking, sales, and camper interactions, maintaining a friendly and organized environment.
Mentor counselors: Provide guidance, support, and feedback to summer counselors, fostering a positive staff culture.
Provide camper supervision: Lead activities during daily all staff meetings. When necessary, members of the leadership team may serve as a counselor for an hour to a week.
Create a Christ centered space at camp where all are welcomed, accepted, and celebrated as they are.

Position Specific Qualifications:

Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Creativity and enthusiasm for crafts, games, and group activities.
Ability to mentor and support staff in a collaborative environment.
Desired, not required: Valid Driver’s License
Desired, not required: 21 years of age or older
Desired, not required: Previous experience working with children or in a camp/recreational setting.
Desired, not required: Ability to play guitar or willingness to learn

Adventure Coordinator

The Adventure Coordinator is responsible for leading and overseeing all outdoor and adventure-based programming at camp. This includes managing the waterfront, swimming, boating, camping trips, and cookouts. The Adventure Coordinator ensures that campers have safe, memorable, and exciting experiences while also serving as a mentor and point person for summer counselors.

Key Responsibilities

Waterfront management: Supervise swimming and boating activities, ensuring safety protocols are followed and equipment is maintained.
Boating activities: Organize canoeing, paddle boarding, and other boating programs, teaching proper techniques and safety.
Camping trips: Plan and lead overnight camping experiences, including site setup, outdoor skills, and camper engagement.
Cookouts & outdoor meals: Coordinate campfire cooking and outdoor dining experiences, fostering teamwork and fun.
Mentor counselors: Provide guidance, training, and support to summer counselors, helping them succeed in their roles.
Safety oversight: Enforce camp safety standards across all adventure activities, including emergency preparedness and risk management.
Promote camp spirit: Encourage enthusiasm, resilience, and camaraderie among campers and staff.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Enthusiasm for working with children and creating memorable camp experiences.
Valid Driver’s License
21 years of age or older

Day Camp Coordinator

The Day Camp Coordinator is responsible for leading and managing day camp programs hosted at congregations. This role serves as the primary liaison between the camp and the congregation, ensuring smooth communication, strong partnerships, and a positive camper experience. The Day Camp Coordinator plans and facilitates crafts, activity hours, and special programming, while also mentoring and supporting summer counselors in their work.

Key Responsibilities

Lead day camps at congregations: Oversee daily operations, ensuring activities run smoothly and campers are engaged.
